Tipping in Italy - Hotels
Tipping in Italy - hotels is not that different than what we are used to here in the U.S. However, there are some things you should be aware of. Below are a few guidelines.
Charges for any servicse are normally included in the bills for hotels, however, a small tip to the staff members is much appreciated. In general, in a medium-priced hotel, maids usually should be given about €.75 per day or about €4-€5 a week; bellhops, when they carry your bags for you to your room, or help you in any way should be given around €.50-€1.
For room service and valet service, a minimum of €.50 is usually best - again for medium-priced hotels. You can tip breakfast waiters around €.25 per day per table, but do this at the end of your stay. For example, let's say you and your family of 8 stay for 5 days in a hotel in Monterosso al Mare. Every morning, you go down to the dining room and since the tables are small, you spread your family among two tables. At the end of your stay, it would be nice to tip the breakfast server (usually the same person) €2.50. Doesn't sound like much, but it is appreciated and of course, you can always tip more.
Keep in mind that if you are staying in a more expensive place, you will want to increase your tipping in Italy at hotels by around 40%. And if you are staying in a luxury hotel, then you need to double these amounts.
The concierge can be extremely helpful to your stay in whatever city you find yourself in Italy. Give him or her around 15% of the bill for services rendered. Doormen can be tipped about €.25 for calling you a cab.
